Weather

Brunei’s weather and rain patterns are fairly constant, with some months (November to February) having statistically higher rainfall, though entire days of continuous rain are rather rare.

Currency

The Brunei Dollar is the national currency and is pegged to the value of the Singapore Dollar. Both currencies can be used locally.

Electrics

Electricity is 220-240 volts AC, 50 cycles, 3-pin British type plugs.

Visa requirements

EU countries, USA, Canada and Asean countries don’t need a visa. Australians can receive a visa on arrival.

National Food & Drink

Ambuyat, a dish made of sago starch dipped in pungent sauces is considered the national dish.

Local Culture

Brunei is a country seeped in Islamic tradition and its culture. For example, It is polite to accept even just a little food and drink when offered!

Times zones

Brunei is 8 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+8), in the same time zone as Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Language

Bahasa Melayu (Malay) is the official language, but English is the language of business and is widely spoken at all levels.

Shopping

A wide variety of goods at competitive prices, such as earthenware ornaments, gilded curios, exotic furniture designs, Chinese urns, brocade tablecloths, mats and door hangings, linens, Indian finery, Thai haute couture, branded goods, the latest electronics, watches, shoes, handbags and imported foodstuffs can all be found in Brunei.

History

A British protectorate until 1984, and a new parliament being sworn in 2004, Brunei is becoming an increasingly dominant country in South East Asia and has been very stable for a number of years.

Transport

You can get around Brunei by bus, hired car or taxi. However, if you are travelling inland, then a hiring a car would be the best option. Water taxis are easily available to go to the Water Village (Kampong Ayer).

Drinking Water

Tap water is ok to drink in Brunei. Bottled water is readily available and make sure the bottles are sealed when purchasing.

The original “Venice of the East” as described by Magellan’s chronicler in 1521, Kampong Ayer, literally “Water Village”, is the heart and soul of Brunei, having been for centuries the political, trading and settlement center of the Brunei Kingdom.
